QOM (IRNA) -- Ayatollah Sadeq Khalkhali, the head of Iran's first revolutionary courts, died after undergoing an operation in Tehran Wednesday night at the age of 76, his son told IRNA Thursday.

"Ayatollah Khalkhali died of old age as well as cardiac and brain diseases after an operation Wednesday night," Mohammad Guivi (Khalkhali) said.

His body is to be buried at the shrine of Hadhrat Masoumeh (SA), sister of the eighth Imam of Shia Muslims Imam Reza (peace be upon him), in Qom Friday, he added.

Summing up his record, Guivi said, "The late (Ayatollah) was a student and associate of the Islamic Republic's founder (late Imam Khomeini), who taught in Qom's seminary school, besides serving in judicial posts and representing Qom in parliament".
